DFB Cup - "It hurts incredibly": BVB suffers and hopes for a reaction

Borussia Dortmund will go into the important home match against RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga with a heavy heart after the round of 16 exit in the DFB Cup.

"It hurts beyond belief that we missed another huge opportunity this year," said goalkeeper Gregor Kobel after the deserved 2-0 (0-0) defeat at VfB Stuttgart. BVB 's probably best chance of winning the title this season has therefore already gone. Winning the cup must always be the club's goal, explained the Swiss. In view of the many Bundesliga teams that have been eliminated, the path to this goal was supposedly an easy one.

Dortmund have already qualified for the round of 16 in the Champions League. In the league, however, they are already ten points behind leaders Bayer Leverkusen. If they lose against Leipzig on Saturday (18:30/Sky), the Black & Yellows will already be four points behind the places in the table that entitle them to participate in the top flight.

BVB do not want to lose touch

"The season is long. You realize that again and again. Saturday's game won't decide the whole season," said keeper Kobel. But he also added: "We have to be extremely careful not to lose touch. That starts with the next game." The 26-year-old added that the mood was "already shit" after another very poor performance in Stuttgart. BVB had already lost at VfB in the league three and a half weeks ago.

"We've shown often enough that we can also show a reaction," said sporting director Sebastian Kehl with a view to the Leipzig game. However, they would have to "put in a better performance to survive". Kehl defended the tactically defensive approach of coach Edin Terzic, who had the team defend with a back three and back five in Stuttgart.
