King Charles III and Queen Camilla - Island visit with foot band

King Charles III (75) and Queen Camilla (76) continued their two-day visit to the Channel Islands on July 16. On the first day in Jersey, a security alarm caused a scare, leading the British royal couple to be quickly escorted from an event to a hotel. However, it turned out to be a false alarm, allowing the royals to return to their duties after about 20 minutes. The following day, Guernsey was on the itinerary, and the pair made headlines once again. On July 17, the Queen, who celebrated her 77th birthday, suffered a "light ankle sprain" on the neighboring Jersey.

Injured during Jersey visit?

According to the "Daily Mail," the Queen injured herself the previous day on Jersey by tripping on a pavement. Helpers reported that Camilla and King Charles arrived in St. Peter Port with a noticeable bandage on the Queen's right ankle. The 76-year-old wore low-heeled pumps, a royal blue silk crepe dress, and a coat by Fiona Clare. Despite the injury, the Queen laughed as she arrived, seemingly delighted by the flag-waving crowds and the sunny weather. The day before in Jersey had seen heavy rain.

The royal couple were greeted by hundreds of well-wishers as they made their way along the Strand Promenade of St. Peter Port to the Parliament of Guernsey on Tuesday morning. The royal standard was hoisted, and a 21-gun salute was fired. Afterward, Charles and Camilla attended a special session of the States of Deliberation. This tradition is observed when a new monarch visits Guernsey for the first time. The last time this occurred was in 1957 during Queen Elizabeth II's (1926-2022) first visit.

The Royal Family posts pictures of past visits on Instagram

The Royal Family commemorated the late Queen with a post on Instagram featuring images of Charles, Camilla, and Elizabeth II during past visits. The caption read, "Today's engagements will highlight the unique local culture and the heritage of the Bailiwick of Guernsey, Alderney, and Sark, as well as the Bailiwick's commitment to supporting biodiversity, sustainability, and climate change mitigation." The royal couple had visited Guernsey and the Bailiwick earlier to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II's diamond jubilee in 2012. Camilla wore blue that year as well. The Queen visited Guernsey a total of six times - the last time in 2005.

The Channel Islands' connections to the Crown date back centuries. In 933, the Channel Islands officially became part of the Duchy of Normandy, and after William the Conqueror's victory in the Battle of Hastings in 1066, Normandy and England came under common rule. In 1204, Guernsey pledged allegiance to King John of England as he lost his continental territories in the Normandy. And 820 years later, the Channel Islands remain the only part of the former Duchy of Normandy that remains loyal to the British Crown.

  3. Despite the injury, the king pair continued their visit to Guernsey the next day, where they met the King of Jersey, reaffirming the Channel Islands' loyalty to the British Crown, a tradition that dates back to 933.
  4. Mail Daily reported that despite the slight injury, Queen Camilla maintained her composure, wearing a royal blue silk crepe dress and a coat by Fiona Clare, her spirit not dampened by the incident.
  5. King Charles III., Queen Camilla, and Queen Elizabeth II's shared dedication to Guernsey was evident during their visit, as they celebrated the Bailiwick's commitment to biodiversity, sustainability, and climate change mitigation, a tradition they carried on from Queen Elizabeth II.
  6. In 17 years, King Charles III. and Queen Camilla visited Guernsey, rekindling memories of Queen Elizabeth II's visits in 1957 and 2005, with Camilla wearing a similar blue dress, just like she did in 2012, to celebrate the Queen's diamond jubilee.
