"The staff lounge area" - International Honors for Popular Export Product
Following the Oscar Awards disappointment, recognition for "The Teacher's Room" later arrived at the Guadalajara International Film Festival in Mexico. This school drama won the initial Latin American Critics' Award for European Films and the Latin American film critics' prize for European films. The movie outshone "Animal" from Greece and "Bad Living" from Portugal, which also made it to the final selection. Altogether, 23 European projects were up for consideration.
Berlinale to Mexico: The Triumph of "The Teacher's Room"
The award season for "The Teacher's Room" wrapped up triumphantly with this victory. The film was initially showcased in February 2023 during the Berlinale. There, it claimed two honours - the CICAE Art Cinema Award and the Label Europa Cinemas prize.
At the German Film Awards, a total of five Lolas followed, with "The Teacher's Room" being crowned the best film. Awards also went to director Ilker Çatak and leading actress Leonie Benesch (33).
Catak and co-writer Johannes Duncker (41) were nominated for their screenplay at the European Film Awards, as was Benesch for outstanding leading performance. Nevertheless, the pinnacle was the nomination for the Oscars as the best international film. Sadly, the German submission was pipped by the more global, German-language Holocaust drama "Zone of Interest", co-produced in the UK.
