Incredible Raiders show no mercy to Chargers
Sometimes sport is simply inexplicable: On Sunday, the Las Vegas Raiders failed to score any points at all - now the team led by Jakob Johnson from Stuttgart has set a record. Virtually everything went right in the crazy win against the Chargers.
With German football pro Jakob Johnson, the Las Vegas Raiders scored more points in their 63:21 win against the Los Angeles Chargers than ever before in their NFL history. At the start of the final quarter, the score was 63:7, but not quite enough to break the record set in 1966. Back then, the Washington Redskins had even scored 72 points against the New York Giants. The hosts had scored a touchdown from seven of their first nine attacks. Unbelievable: Four days earlier, the Raiders had not even managed a field goal in their 3-0 loss to the Minnesota Vikings.
Stuttgart's Johnson emphasized the special nature of the result. "You don't get many nights like this in the NFL, you have to enjoy it." He was once again promoted to the active squad on the day of the game and played a big part in the Raiders' outstanding start. With good blocks, he created the decisive spaces for his teammates one day before his 29th birthday. "We played our game from the very first drive, you can build momentum and we managed to do that," he said.
Johnson was initially released in November and has since been signed to the Raiders' practice squad. "If it's beneficial for the team for me to play, I'm in. If not, I'm not. I'll take it day by day, week by week, like I did the days before," he said. "I hope I get a few more opportunities to play with the guys here, because playing together as a team is just really fun."
The Chargers did not get into the game at all until 49:0. The visitors conceded their second and third touchdowns after losing the ball, and Brandon Staley's job as head coach in Los Angeles is likely to be up for debate in the coming days. Both teams had started the game with five wins and eight defeats. The Raiders had previously conceded three defeats in a row. Theoretically, the Raiders still have a chance of making the play-offs with six wins. A pitch-black week ended for the Chargers shortly after quarterback Justin Herbert was ruled out for the season due to injury.
