"In your own hands": Siewert coach of Mainz until further notice

After the surprising 2:0 win over RB Leipzig, Jan Siewert could remain coach of FSV Mainz 05 in the longer term.

"He is coach until further notice. He has not diminished his chances. He has it in his own hands. He has sent the best letter of application," said sporting director Martin Schmidt about the interim coach, who took over from the departed Bo Svensson on Thursday. The 41-year-old Siewert had already taken charge of a game on an interim basis in the 2020/21 season before Svensson arrived. Back then, the team lost 5-2 to FC Bayern.

"I'm totally happy. This win is for the club, for the players - and above all for Bo Svensson," said Siewert, who only had one training session with the team at the bottom of the table before the match against the top team. On his future, he said: "I like to take on responsibility, and that's what I'm doing - it's logical. At the moment, I want to help everyone, help the players, help the staff - that's my job, and that's exactly what I'm doing."

Jan Siewert's recent victory over RB Leipzig with FSV Mainz 05 in the Bundesliga has kept his coaching position with the team, at least for the time being. In this decisive match, Siewert proved that he hasn't jeopardized his chances of continuing as the coach, a possibility that now rests in his own hands.
