In the 3-2 triumph over Columbus Crew, Lionel Messi contributes to Inter Miami securing their inaugural Supporters’ Shield.
Messi netted two spectacular goals towards the end of the first half, one being a close-range strike and the other a stunning free-kick curve, which allowed Inter Miami to outshine the Crew and clinch the trophy awarded to the team with the most impressive regular season performance.
Luis Suarez, Messi's previous Barcelona colleague, reestablished their two-goal lead shortly after Columbus had brought the scoreline back to 2-1 through Diego Rossi's effort in the 46th minute. Miami managed to hold onto their win despite Cucho Hernandez scoring a penalty late in the second half.
Messi expressed his satisfaction afterwards in an interview with Apple TV, stating, "I'm happy, happy for this team. I told you at the start of the year, we knew this was a team to fight for this."
He continued, "We took charge from the beginning, we had the players to do this. I'm glad we've achieved the first objective, and we're thinking about the next."
Messi had been sidelined for over three months due to injury and international commitments before returning to action on September 15. This season, he's scored 17 goals and provided 15 assists in just 17 matches for the team.
The victory gave Inter Miami the top spot in the regular-season table, granting them home-field advantage in the MLS Cup Playoffs.
To surpass New England Revolution's MLS-record 73 points from the 2021 season, Miami must win their remaining two league games.
However, their ultimate goal will undoubtedly be the MLS Cup.
Miami co-owner and ex-England international David Beckham expressed his pride on Instagram, writing, "So proud to witness our players lift the Supporters Shield following a fantastic victory in Columbus. Another remarkable accomplishment in the club's football history, and I'm pleased to bring this trophy to the league's most dedicated fans. Now, let's push forward and aim for the next one."
Messi's impressive performance continued in the match, scoring another two goals, showing his brilliance in sport, particularly in football. During the second half, Miami managed to maintain their lead despite Columbus' attempts, ensuring they remained undefeated in their pursuit of the MLS Cup.
