In Sydney's well-known aquarium, one part of the renowned homosexual penguin duo meets its demise.

In 2018, Sphen gained worldwide recognition when he paired up with fellow gay gentoo penguin, Magic. The duo, affectionately known as "Sphengic," was caught waddling and swimming together before the breeding season. Their strong bond and loving family touched millions of hearts.

Sphen and Magic raised two chicks: Lara, 6, and Clancy, 4. To help Magic cope with Magic's partner's sudden absence, the aquarium staff took Magic to see Sphen, explaining that his partner's absence was due to unforeseen circumstances. The interaction between the two was heartwarming, as Magic responded with music, which was delightfully received by the colony.

The loss of Sphen was deeply felt by the penguin colony, the staff, and everyone who had been inspired by their story. Richard Dilly, the aquarium's manager, expressed the grief, stating, "The loss of Sphen is heartbreaking." He added, "We want to take this opportunity to remember Sphen's life and celebrate his iconic status."

Sphen had a long life for a gentoo penguin, typically having a lifespan of 12 to 13 years. Sphen and Magic shared a deep bond, often spending time together even outside the breeding season, which was rare for their species.

Now, the focus is on Magic, who will soon embark on his first breeding season without Sphen. The famed couple has inspired a Mardi Gras float, been featured in the Netflix series "Atypical," and included in the New South Wales education curriculum, their home state. Countless books and movies also acknowledge their love story.

The renowned duo fondly referred to as

In 2018, Sphen and Magic became parents when they were given a "backup" egg to hatch from another penguin couple. Although gentoo penguins often lay two eggs each breeding season, they can only raise one due to limited resources. However, young Lara, weighing 91 grams, was born on October 19, 2018, and in 2020, their family expanded as Clancy joined them.

Sphen and Magic aren't the only same-sex penguin couples to successfully hatch an egg. Similar couples in New York and Spain have also experienced parenthood.

Sphen's significance extended beyond his relationship. Through their fame, the aquarium was able to raise awareness and funds for conservational causes such as protecting wild penguins, plastic pollution, climate change, and other social issues, including equality.

Tributes poured in from fans on the aquarium's website, such as Vivienne's heartfelt message, "Rest in peace, little guy, what a wonder to the world you were with your beautiful Magic." Vicki, a fan, wrote, "RIP to a champion. Love knows no boundaries."

Upon gaining knowledge of his companion Sphen's demise, Magic broke into song.

After experiencing the loss of Sphen, Magic might find comfort in traveling to familiar places that held memories with his late partner. The worldwide recognition of Sphen and Magic's love story has led to numerous adaptations, including a Mardi Gras float, a Netflix series, and inclusion in educational programs, showcasing the impact of their travel experiences.
