Deeply unfortunate, indeed.

"Impudent" Dutchman Hums During Approach to Next Germany Match

Julian Nagelsmann fiercely reprimanded him, BVB advisor Matthias Sammer labeled him as a "really arrogant individual": Dutch referee Danny Makkelie will officiate the upcoming EURO match for the German national team against Hungary. The DFB team doesn't have the best memories of this Dutch official.

UEFA has slated the 41-year-old Makkelie for the match against Hungary (Wednesday, 6 p.m./ARD and MagentaTV and in the liveticker on ntv.de). This will be the third time Makkelie officiates the DFB team in a major tournament: He officiated the elimination against England (0:2) in the last EURO, as well as the 1:1 against Spain at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Makkelie is known for his experience, but also his controversial reputation - accusations of arrogance have been a constant in his career. Borussia Dortmund had unpleasant experiences with Makkelie during the previous season, who has been a FIFA referee since 2011. Dortmund felt they were treated unfairly by Makkelie during the elimination game against Chelsea in March 2023. Advisor Matthias Sammer dubbed Makkelie as a "really arrogant person", club boss Hans-Joachim Watzke expressed to the SID at the time, "You always get the feeling that he wants to be the main star on the field."

Nagelsmann: "That penalty was a joke"

Germany national team coach Julian Nagelsmann got upset over this Dutchman, who he believed was responsible for the 0:1 defeat against Paris St. Germain in the Champions League group stage 2020/2021. Nagelsmann commented on the winning goal for PSG by Neymar, saying, "That penalty was a joke" - Marcel Sabitzer had not even touched Angel Di Maria. "Something like that at Champions League level is really disappointing", Nagelsmann added.

However, referees from Bayer Leverkusen may not have the fondest memories of Makkelie: He officiated the nerve-wracking return leg in the Europa League against AS Roma in early May. However, he gave two penalties (first justified due to a foul by Jonathan Tah, second due to handball via VAR) to the Italians, who still lost after the last-minute goal by Josip Stanisic. Makkelie also officiated Bayern Munich's entry into the Champions League semifinals against Arsenal in mid-April with a 1:0.
