"If I come back with little money, I'm in danger of something bad": seller is afraid of his wife

"Bares for Rares" - "If I come back with little money, I'm in danger of something bad": seller is afraid of his wife

No rarity, but a "beautiful rarity" is what Hans Schrader believes he possesses. The 76-year-old retired postal worker from Hoeven in the Oldenburg district is selling, on behalf of his wife, a carafe that she received as a gift from her mother thirty years ago.

Expert Bianca Berding describes the style of the carafe as Neoclassicism and speaks of an "eclectic style mix of various forms". "My goodness", exclaims Horst Lighter in response to the art historical presentation. The manufacturer identifies the expert as the Portuguese company Topazio, created in the second half of the 20th century.

"Money for rares": A saying of the old Romans

As a wish price, a sum between 400 and 600 Euro floats before the seller's eyes. The expert assesses the object at only 300 to 400 Euro, referring to the low material value. Schrader agrees and decides to take a chance.

But just before it goes into the dealer's room, Hans Schrader is reminded by his wife's words. She had given him a saying of the old Romans about the fate that blooms for those who bring bad news. "If I come back with little money, something bad will happen", he laughs.

But the dealers are satisfied with the seller. "A carafe always goes", finds Walter "Waldi" Lehnertz, and starts with his obligatory 80 Euro, followed by others. With 250 Euro comes the highest bid at first from Sarah Schreiber. But Schrader is not yet ready to sell. "I have to tell it to my wife, consider that", he says - and demands 10 Euro more. Jos van Katwijk is willing to pay that.

Hans Schrader is satisfied with the course of the auction: "The head stays on", is his verdict.

In the dealer room, Bianca Berding expresses interest in evaluating the carafe, having expertise in Neoclassical and eclectic styles. Recalling her mother's gift, Hans Schrader hesitates to sell the carafe to Bianca Berding, despite receiving a lower valuation of 'cash for rares'. The vendor, Jos van Katwijk, ultimately purchases the carafe, keeping the seller's hopes alive that the 'head stays on'.
