When the "Batgirl" movie, which was nearly finished, unexpectedly got axed right before its August 2022 premiere, it stirred up a storm in Hollywood and the superhero movie community. However, Michael Keaton, the 72-year-old Batman actor who had already wrapped up his scenes for the project, appears unfazed by its cancellation, implying fans might never get to witness it. In a conversation with GQ magazine, when asked if he found the end of "Batgirl" disheartening, Keaton responded nonchalantly, "Not particularly, it didn't impact me one way or another."
"Batgirl" was a "satisfying payday" for Michael Keaton
The actor, who initially brought the Dark Knight to life on the silver screen in 1989 and 1992, elaborated to GQ that the scrapped "Batgirl" film represented a "large, amusing, rewarding paycheck" for him, showing his fingers to symbolize money.
Warner Bros. Discovery decided to shelve the "Batgirl" movie, featuring Leslie Grace (29), as the main character, in August 2022. They attributed the decision to financial considerations and the need to restructure the DC film division. According to Variety, a US entertainment industry journal, this move could yield tax benefits for Warner Bros. Discovery, permitting them to write off the estimated $90 million they had invested in the film.
Although this was a big blow to the involved talent, directors Adil El Arbi (36) and Bilall Fallah ("Bad Boys for Life" and "Ms. Marvel", 38) expressed their sadness and shock upon hearing the news, while Keaton seemed unphased.
After wrapping up his scenes for the "Batgirl" movie, Michael Keaton mentioned that the project served as a "satisfying paycheque" for him. Despite the film's cancellation, the 72-year-old actor remained unfazed and nonchalant, stating that it didn't significantly impact him.
