Hummels criticizes impersonal goodbyes and false statements.
Mats Hummels' time with Borussia Dortmund comes to a close, as per the club's announcement. His contract won't be renewed. Shortly after the news broke out this summer, the 35-year-old defender penned a heartfelt note to fans of Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund, expressing his desire for a different send-off and addressing the spread of some "untruths" about him recently.
Earlier, Borussia Dortmund had revealed that Hummels would not be offered a new contract after 13 years in their iconic black-and-yellow jersey.
"Most importantly, the way this parting is handled makes me extremely sad, as this impersonal departure does not do justice to our shared history. However, that's how things often go with business," he penned in his note. He plans to make amends for this farewell in front of the legendary Yellow Wall, the South Stand in the future.
He chose to call it a day a bit sooner because he didn't want to blunder his future decisions. Two weeks ago, he played in the Champions League to the very end, but his subsequent disappointment mounted. One unfortunate incident was his loss in the Champions League final against Real Madrid and later being omitted from Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann's squad for the Euros. The end of his Dortmund journey felt like a natural progression amidst these disappointments.
"Don't take everything you've read in the last few days as the gospel"
In his letter, Hummels also tackled the various rumors surrounding his personal life. "Don't believe everything you've read in the last few days. There was a lot of nonsense there," the defender confessed. "A 35-year-old player without a clear idea of his career after the summer held much lesser influence than reported in the media."
Before the game against Real Madrid (0:2), Hummels had expressed disapproval of trainer Edin Terzic's methods in an interview with "Sport Bild." Terzic stepped down from his position on Wednesday. It had been speculated that Hummels might demand a contract extension contingent upon Terzic's continuance at the club. However, this is not the case. Nuri Sahin is being considered as Terzic's successor. Hummels remained tight-lipped on what his future holds.
