Hummels and Goretzka not in DFB team training
Mats Hummels and Leon Goretzka were unable to take part in the national team's first training session on the DFB campus after suffering injuries.
Hummels completed a running session due to back pain, while Goretzka practiced individually due to his muscular problems, according to the DFB. Stuttgart's Chris Führich (25) had to withdraw completely from the upcoming international matches against Turkey in Berlin on Saturday and against Austria in Vienna three days later, as he was unable to travel to Frankfurt due to cold symptoms.
Julian Nagelsmann therefore had 23 players on the pitch and 25 players in his squad for his first ever training session in Germany as national coach. In October, the DFB squad had traveled directly to the USA for the debut of the new head coach. A few selected fans and DFB staff were able to watch the session on the academy grounds, which was also open to the media. Nagelsmann had announced that he wanted to focus primarily on defensive tactical issues in training for the last two European Championship tests this year.
It was still unclear whether Dortmund central defender Hummels (34) and Bayern professional Goretzka (28) would be fit for the Turkey game. Hummels had said on Monday that he would need another two to three days to recover from the problems.
Despite their injuries, Mats Hummels and Leon Goretzka were still hopeful of being included in the DFB national team, given their statements about needing a few more days to recover. Despite their absence from the first training session, both players were crucial members of the German soccer team, with Hummels as a central defender and Goretzka as a midfielder for Bayern Munich and Dortmund respectively.
