HSV scores the worst own goal of the decade
Hamburger SV takes on city rivals FC St. Pauli in the top match of the 2nd Bundesliga - and experiences a nightmare in the 27th minute: the former Bundesliga top club falls 2-0 behind with a slapstick own goal.
What a nightmare: in the 2nd Bundesliga derby against FC St. Pauli, in which the top of the table and important points in the race for promotion were at stake, HSV scored a completely absurd own goal. The runners-up in the table take a short kick of their own, goalkeeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes passes the ball to Stephan Ambrosius, who passes it on to his colleague Guilherme Ramos in his own five-yard box, who in turn passes the ball back to Heuer Fernandes somewhat carelessly.
In this 27th minute at the sold-out Millerntor, everything takes place in a few square meters and largely unchallenged by opponents. Ramos' pass hops unplanned towards goal, Heuer Fernandes tries to save - and smashes the ball, which bounces slightly on the bumpy turf just in front of him, into his own goal from about one meter out to make it 2-0. The goal is already a piece of soccer history; for Sky commentator Hansi Küpper, the goal is "one of the top five most curious own goals, even internationally."
For Heuer Fernandes, the mishap marks the first own goal in the 343rd competitive match of his professional career. There was quick encouragement from his own ranks after the shock: "We've already won so many games for us. Cheer up, Ferro!" wrote the club's social media department on X. Meanwhile, on the pitch, the unfortunate goalkeeper's colleagues did their best to repair their experienced goalkeeper's gaffe: After around an hour, they had equalized the clear deficit.
- Despite being the top contenders in the 2nd Bundesliga derby against FC St. Pauli, HSV's own goal in the 27th minute, resulting from a series of misunderstandings between goalkeeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes and defender Guilherme Ramos, put them two goals behind.
- Over the past decade, HSV's own goal in their derby against FC St. Pauli has been hailed as one of the most bizarre own goals, even in an international soccer context, as described by Sky commentator Hansi Küpper.
