Horrified Hansa boss announces drastic penalties

Following the serious riots at the second division match against Hansa Rostock, SC Paderborn managing director Martin Hornberger has called for consequences for violent spectators. "The DFL and the DFB need to consider whether clubs with fans who are prone to such violence should be allowed into other stadiums at all," he told the TV channel Sky. Hansa's CEO Robert Marien is also calling for drastic measures and has already announced them. It is "not enough to apologize and distance ourselves, there will be severe penalties - period", he told the Bild newspaper the day after the riots.
"There can be no whitewashing or trivializing. There can be no overly soft punishments, there will have to be clear consequences," Marien explained in no uncertain terms: "The fact is that the external image and the events are now a complete disaster, there's no other way to put it. They will also have considerable consequences." He knew from SCP managing director Hornberger and the police "that there is a lot of video material", said Marien: "We will process this and then the club will impose consequences and there will certainly also be criminal proceedings."
Rostock supporters had caused serious riots during the 3-0 defeat in Paderborn on Friday evening. They set off pyrotechnics, threw objects at police officers and smashed drinks and food stalls in the stadium. A neutral fan was also seriously injured in the head by a rioter from the visitors and had to be taken to hospital. "They showed full violence," said Hornberger. "I've been in a position of responsibility at SC Paderborn 07 for 22 years, but I've never experienced anything like this."
"We will send the bill to Hansa Rostock"
The police and SC Paderborn had expected fan protests during the match due to the vote in favor of investors joining the German Football League (DFL). "However, the events in the SCP07 stadium went far beyond what was to be expected," they said in a joint statement. The match was interrupted twice due to the pyro incidents and threatened to be abandoned. A total of eight stewards and twelve police officers suffered injuries.
There was violence not only inside the stadium, but also outside it. "In the course of the admission phase", "ten people were denied entry", reported Marien, "as a result, there were increased acts of solidarity and riots against the police. There was considerable damage to property and people were also injured."
Hornberger was horrified. "We had players who didn't want to leave because they were scared and felt very depressed," said the 62-year-old, describing the situation. He estimates the massive material damage at more than 100,000 euros. The visiting club will have to pay for this. "We will send the bill to Hansa Rostock. It's not our fault," said Hornberger. Rostock boss Marien said: "We will do our part in dealing with the situation and, of course, settling the damage."
