Germany out of the European Championship - Highest TV ratings for a decade
The WM Final in 2014 had better ratings: The EM loss of the German football national team against Spain on July 5th attracted millions of viewers to their screens. As reported by industry service "DWDL", 26.13 million people on average tuned in to the football game on First TV in private households. Excluding communal viewing at public events or in sports bars, the actual figures are significantly higher.
Highest Quota since 2014
The quarterfinal of the Home EM thus achieved an overall market share of 80.9%. In the relevant target group of 14-49 year olds, it was even 89.7%. This is the highest TV quota in a decade, as the industry service "DWDL" reported. Since then, such high numbers were only achieved at the WM Final of the DFB team against Argentina in 2014. Back then, more than 90% of the target group watched the German victory.
The pre-match programs also scored points
The reports around the match against Spain were also able to keep the audience glued to their TV sets. On average, 11.41 million people watched the ARD program between 5 PM and around 9:30 PM. This corresponds to a total market share of 49.5% and 59.8% among the younger demographic.
Germany's national team trainer Julian Nagelsmann (36) and his squad are unlikely to be comforted by these numbers: The German team looked visibly disappointed and close to tears after their 1:2 loss. Youngster Florian Wirtz (21) saved the team from elimination with his equalizing goal in the 89th minute, but after 119 minutes, Mikel Merino (28) shocked the Germans with the winning goal for Spain.
- Despite Germany's unfortunate exit from the European Championship against Spain in 202x, the match nonetheless attracted the highest TV quota in a decade, as reported by "DWDL".
- Comparably, the World Cup final in 2014 between Germany and Argentina also saw similar high numbers, with over 90% of the target demographic tuning in.
- In the wake of this defeat, Germany's coach Julian Nagelsmann and his squad might not find much comfort in knowing that the pre-match programs itself managed to secure an average viewership of 11.41 million people.
- Reflecting on the past decade, Germany's national soccer team has only managed to reach DWDL's celebrated DWDL rating in two significant occasions: their EP loss against Spain and their World Cup final victory in 2014.
