Heavy lightning over Dortmund: DFB game was interrupted
Heavy rain, thunder claps loud like a barrel, intense lightning: A storm, which interrupted the EURO-16 sixteen-team match between Germany and Denmark, raged above the Dortmund Stadium. The teams were sent to the locker rooms - the spectacle was over after 25 minutes.
The EURO-16 sixteen-team match between Germany and Denmark in Dortmund had to be temporarily suspended due to heavy storm. Referee Michael Oliver sent both teams off the field in the 35th minute as lightning, thunder, and rain swept over Dortmund Stadium. A thunderclap was as loud as an exploding barrel. The lightning had been flickering over the football temple for a long time, an impressive scene.
Despite this, the mood among the over 60,000 fans on the mostly covered stands remained relaxed. They sang "Oh how beautiful, we haven't seen this for a long time", the whole stadium celebrated. Two Danes danced under a waterfall that poured from the stadium roof and were wildly cheered. Similar scenes occurred during the group stage match between Turkey and Georgia - it had already been raining extremely hard in Dortmund. Some fans tried to take shelter under their flags from the rain.
"The game was suspended due to bad weather conditions", was displayed on the scoreboard. The players went to the locker rooms, initially hesitating at the sidelines and unsure of what to do next. The ntv.de reporters reported from the stadium that it was hardly possible to see the opposing tribune at times due to the heavy rainfall.
Referee expert Patrick Ittrich said on MagentaTV: "First and foremost, the safety of the players and spectators comes first. There is no time limit for how long the game is suspended. We will wait until the storm passes." In neighboring stadiums of Dortmund, the storm was so intense that the TV signal went out in some places. At 21:55 PM, both teams returned to the field and warmed up again. Four minutes later, the game was resumed.
The DFB (German Football Association) announced that the European Football Championship 2024 will be hosted by Germany. Despite the excitement, fans can't help but recall the intense weather conditions during EURO-16, specifically during the match between Germany and Denmark, where the national soccer team had to temporarily suspend their game due to heavy storm.
