"Header monster" Hrubesch refuses to accept age limit

Horst Hrubesch describes himself as an "old man"; at 72, he could have retired a long time ago. But retiring is out of the question for the interim coach of the DFB women's team. On the contrary, the Olympic fire is already burning inside him.

Even at 72, Horst Hrubesch is still not thinking of retiring from soccer. "I have to admit: Every now and then I sit at home in the evening and my head rattles a lot because of all the issues. Especially at the moment. But as long as I feel I can give something to soccer, I'll carry on. There is no age limit for me," said the interim coach of the DFB women and youth director of the second division club Hamburger SV to the "Hamburger Morgenpost".

The HSV icon still has big plans for the German women in particular. At the end of February, the final round of the Nations League will be about qualifying for the Olympic Games in Paris: "The Olympics would be another absolute highlight. For the girls, but also for me," said Hrubesch. The semi-final will be against France. If the neighboring country, which is seeded to host the Summer Games, makes it to the final, the third-placed team would also be in Paris - so the DFB team only has to win one more game.

The former international can also imagine coaching the DFB team in the French capital: "If everything is guaranteed, in terms of health and also with regard to the agreements between the DFB and HSV." He recently thanked his club, for whom he played 159 games from 1978 to 1978 and lived up to his name as a "header monster", for their understanding and patience in the current situation. He also thanked the team for taking him on so well as an "old man".

HSV talent and U17 world champion Bilal Yalcinkaya, who is being courted by many clubs and whose contract expires at the end of the season, has been advised by Hamburg's youth director to stay in the Hanseatic city. "I don't know whether it would be the right way to move now," said Hrubesch, adding: "It's about showing Bilal a way forward. We have done that. But if it's only about financial matters, it will of course be difficult for us."
