Glastonbury Festival 2024 - He is the main reason why Coldplay exist: Chris Martin brings Michael J. Fox on stage

At the second day of the Glastonbury Festival in English Somerset, Coldplay thrilled the crowd as Headliner on the stage. In front of around 100,000 people, the band led by frontman Chris Martin played numerous hits like "Yellow", "The Scientist", or "Viva la Vida" to perfection. It was the fifth time Coldplay acted as Headliner at the famous music festival - a record for any act. But the most memorable moment of the evening was likely provided by actor Michael J. Fox.

The Hollywood star, who has been suffering from Parkinson's disease for many years, joined the band on stage for two songs. In a wheelchair and holding a guitar, Fox and Martin performed known Coldplay songs "Fix You" and "Humanity". Videos on social media show an emotional audience reacting and celebrating the performance.

The British "Guardian" described: "Even if one didn't get teary-eyed, Coldplay's set was the kind of Glastonbury performance that no one in attendance would soon forget." And the "BBC": "Every Glastonbury needs a defining moment - and this felt like it for 2024."

Chris Martin declared on stage that Michael J. Fox was one of the "Main Reasons" why the band existed. "The main reason why we're in a band is 'Back to the Future', so thank you to our eternal heroes and one of the most wonderful people on Earth, Mr. Michael J. Fox."

Why Michael J. Fox is significant to Coldplay

In the Sci-Fi film from 1985, Michael J. Fox played the leading role of Marty McFly. According to Chris Martin, who explained this during the "The Kelly Clarkson Show" in 2022, the film "Back to the Future" led to the founding of his band in an interview. "I grew up in the countryside in England before the internet existed", he said. He had only heard music on the television and recorded it on a cassette recorder. The scene in "Back to the Future" where Michael J. Fox performs the Chuck Berry song "Johnny B. Goode" convinced him to be in a band.

It's not the first time Michael J. Fox has been on stage with Coldplay. In 2016, he appeared with the band during a concert of the "A Head Full of Dreams Tour" in New York, at that time still without a wheelchair.
