Hannover-Burgdorf defeats record champions Kiel
The TSV Hannover-Burgdorf handball team have dealt record champions THW Kiel the next low blow in the Bundesliga.
The club from Lower Saxony won their home game 36:33 (20:17). Kiel dropped to seventh place behind the Rhein-Neckar Löwen and Hannover after their fifth defeat of the season. Mannheim won 32:28 (17:15) against SC DHfK Leipzig. The gap between Kiel and leaders Füchse Berlin is now nine points.
Strong defensive performance
The home side got into the game immediately thanks to a strong defensive performance. U21 world champion Justus Fischer made it 6:2 (6th minute) and Swedish playmaker Jonathan Edvardsson increased the lead to 9:3 (12th minute). THW coach Filip Jicha called a timeout and demanded "a bit more body language from each individual". To this end, Kiel now opted for a seventh outfield player. However, this measure did not work at first. Fischer scored three times into Kiel's empty net.
Things only got better for Kiel after the break. Hendrik Pekeler tied the scores at 21:21 in the 35th minute. However, Hannover pulled away again thanks to strong saves by former THW goalkeeper Dario Quenstedt. Quenstedt made it 30:27 (50') with a shot across the entire court. TSV held on to this lead and celebrated only its third victory over Kiel. The best scorers were Vincent Büchner with eight goals for Hannover and Eric Johansson with seven for Kiel.
The Lions only had a few problems with their guests from Saxony in the first half. After 12:14 (22'), the team from Mannheim pulled further and further ahead. Playmaker Juri Knorr (10 goals) and center Jannik Kohlbacher (8) together scored more than half of the home side's goals.
