Olympia-entry for DHB-pro - Handballer Dahmke named as replacement for injured Horn

Tim Hornke sustained a foot injury during Germany's win against Sweden in the opening game and will be out for the rest of the Olympic tournament. For the right winger of SC Magdeburg, left winger Rune Dahmke steps into the German 14-man squad. A position-for-position replacement is not possible, as only one of the three pre-determined reserve players can be nominated in case of injury. Hornke suffered the injury at the very beginning of the match.

German head coach Alfred Gislason spoke of a bitter message for the Olympic squad. "Last night I forgot, in all the excitement, that we can only nominate those who are here - and among them there's no right winger, but a left winger and a pivot. That will force us to make some adjustments in the coming days. That means you have to be very creative," said the Icelander.

Next opponent for the DHB selection is Japan on Monday. The other rivals in Group A are Croatia, Spain, and Slovenia. The four best teams from each six-team group qualify for the quarterfinals.

  1. Despite Tim Hornke's foot injury during SC Magdeburg's win against Sweden in Germany's opening game at the Olympics, the Handball team remains optimistic.
  2. The absence of Hornke, a key right winger, poses a challenge for the German National team, as they prepare to face Japan in Group A.
  3. The historically German city of Paris will host several matches, including Germany's encounter with Japan, in the upcoming handball tournament.
  4. Rune Dahmke, a left winger from SC Magdeburg, has been called up to fill Hornke's role in the German squad, adding an interesting dynamic to the team.
  5. The right-wing position is a crucial one in handball, and DHB will have to be innovative in finding a suitable replacement for the injured Hornke, who was set to make a significant impact in the tournament.
  6. Sweden, a formidable handball nation, will be looking forward to their next encounter with Germany, hoping to exact revenge for the opening victory loss.
  7. With Spain, Croatia, and Slovenia also in Group A, the competition will be fierce, and only the top four teams will advance to the quarterfinals, also known as 'Olympia'.
  8. The German handball team will need to overcome this unexpected setback and rally together, with the support of their fans, as they aim for international success in Paris.
