World Cup in Denmark - Handball players with a new "killer mentality"
According to national handball coach Markus Gaugisch, the German national players are more confident than ever before at the World Championships in Scandinavia.
"I can feel the new self-confidence and I'm enjoying it. I enjoy this killer mentality, being merciless at the right moment and detaching myself from all doubts and influences," the 49-year-old told the German Press Agency and spoke of a special quality in the team.
At the season highlight in Denmark, Sweden and Norway, the DHB team has not only attracted attention with victories so far, but also with unusually offensive statements. "Our demands on training and our performance have changed," said co-captain Emily Bölk, explaining: "Many of us now play for top international clubs. Competing with the best in Europe is no longer a specialty for many of them, it's part of their daily business."
The DHB team are therefore confident of victory going into their first main round match against Romania in the early evening (18:00/Sportdeutschland.tv). For both teams it is "a crucial game", said Gaugisch. "If Romania lose this game, they're normally out of here. And if we shake off Romania, we have a very good chance of finishing in the top two."
The German squad's other group opponents are Serbia on Saturday and Denmark on Monday. The two best teams in the group qualify for the quarter-finals.
