Hamann clarifies Musiala's criticism and draws parallels with Müller's situation
Television persona Dietmar Hamann has displayed some leniency in his spat with national team player Jamal Musiala. He attempted to articulate his gripes against Musiala, going as far as making comparisons with FC Bayern legend Thomas Müller. Hamann asserted, "When you play in the ten position, it's also your duty to highlight your teammates like Müller did with Lewandowski one time and again. Müller has seen remarkable growth over the years. Musiala is arguably Europe or even the world's best dribbler, but I believe the scale is off balance at the moment. If he'd look up a bit more and assist his teammates occasionally, it could probably make a difference," Hamann explained during his segment on Sky TV.
It's worth noting that Hamann never doubted Musiala's caliber as a player, nor his age – just entering his 22nd year. "But growth is an ongoing process," Hamann, who previously characterized Musiala as an "individual player" and a "lone entertainer," shared in his column. If given the chance, he'd swap Musiala for Bayer Leverkusen player Florian Wirtz, considering the latter from Bayern's standpoint, he shared.
FC Bayern finds Hamann's Musiala criticism "illogical"
The 21-year-old Munich prodigy's criticisms from FC Bayern left Hamann deeply perplexed. "Anyone voicing such opinions, I find somewhat illogical and over-the-top," said sporting director Christoph Freund before the Bayern match versus Holstein Kiel. "We at FC Bayern are incredibly fortunate to have a player like him."
Coach Vincent Kompany also echoed FC Bayern's support for Musiala: "I've observed a few top-notch players over time. Musiala should just continue being himself," shared the Belgian coach. "A player with such potential could aim to be amongst the top three or four players worldwide. And that's all: I'm overjoyed he plays for us."
Former national team captain and Sky TV expert Lothar Matthäus quickly defended Musiala against his colleague Hamann's criticisms, prior to the Bayern officials' statements. "Musiala plays and contributes to the team. He's not self-centered at all," Matthäus asserted. Musiala is "certainly not a lone entertainer," he added.
Although Dietmar Hamann criticized Jamal Musiala for not assisting his teammates enough, even suggesting a swap with Bayer Leverkusen's Florian Wirtz, FC Bayern's sporting director Christoph Freund found this critique illogical and highly praised Musiala. Similarly, coach Vincent Kompany expressed his support for Musiala, acknowledging his exceptional potential and encouraging him to continue his growth towards becoming one of the top players globally.
