Hamann attacks DFB professional: "Prototype of the problem"

After the fourth Bundesliga game in a row without a win, soccer expert Dietmar Hamann sharply criticizes Borussia Dortmund. He takes the BVB professionals to task for repeatedly "failing to perform". One German international is even "the prototype of the problem".

For Dietmar Hamann, Borussia Dortmund's players are responsible for the club's current plight in the Bundesliga. Although the current fifth-placed team has repeatedly produced great young players such as Jadon Sancho, Ousmane Dembélé and Jude Bellingham, "everyone else who has come to Dortmund has got worse. They'll soon have the HSV syndrome: that all the players they bring in get worse," criticized the former international on the Sky90 programme.

The new signings Marcel Sabitzer, Ramy Bensebaini and Felix Nmecha as well as captain Emre Can, who has been playing for BVB since January 2020, would only shine "through non-performance". Hamann had this to say about Julian Brandt: "He has three good games, then he's the misjudged genius again and then you don't see him for another six weeks." The international is therefore "the prototype of Borussia Dortmund's problem: when things are going well, they're wonderful, they can all play soccer, but we can all do that. And when things aren't going well, you need the guys who lead the way."

Terzić has to "get in between"

Despite four league games without a win recently (defeats against Leipzig and Stuttgart, draws against Leverkusen and Augsburg, plus a draw against Paris Saint-Germain), Hamann defended BVB coach Edin Terzić, saying he is too often let down by the players. However, he would like Terzić to "intervene". The coach may be too well-behaved: "You have to intervene and if he doesn't do it, then Watzke and Kehl should go and publicly intervene," Hamann demanded.

BVB managing director Hans-Joachim Watzke and sporting director Sebastian Kehl had recently held back with public criticism of the players. After the meagre 1:1 in Augsburg on Saturday, Kehl also did not want to comment on the situation of coach Terzic.

In the face of Borussia Dortmund's poor performance in the Bundesliga, criticisms have been pouring in. Dietmar Hamann, a soccer expert, referred to one German international as the "prototype of the problem", implying that he, like many others, has underperformed since joining the team. Edin Terzic, the BVB coach, has been defending his players, but Hamann suggests that Terzic needs to "intervene" more, as the team's performances have been inconsistent, with both great and underwhelming moments.
