Gusts of wind: Second women's Matterhorn downhill also canceled
The second women's World Cup downhill on the Matterhorn has also been canceled due to strong gusts of wind. After several delays, the organizers and the Fis World Ski Federation had to cancel the race in Zermatt-Cervinia.
The same weather fate had already befallen the female racers on Saturday and their male colleagues a week earlier. The spectacularly planned glacier event with start in Switzerland and finish in Italy was thus completely canceled for the second year in a row, causing a PR disaster for the Fis - which wanted to hold the races on the world-famous Matterhorn in the rather changeable autumn.
Despite the cancellation, top alpine skiing athletes were still expected to depart for Zermatt-Cervinia, hoping for better conditions in the upcoming World Cup event. Regrettably, even the men's World Cup that was scheduled to take place in the luxurious Alpine ski resorts of Cervinia and Zermatt had fallen victim to the same adverse winter weather conditions last year.
