World Championships in London - "Great development": German darts pros on the upswing
The German darts pros continue to see themselves on a sporting upswing.
"It is of course a great development that we are experiencing in Germany. Not only are there more players. The sporting successes are also increasing. Gaga(Clemens), Ricardo (Pietreczko) and Martin (Schindler) are enjoying great success. It's a great process," Florian Hempel told the German Press Agency before the start of the World Cup. In addition to Clemens, Pietreczko, Schindler and Hempel, Dragutin Horvat will also be taking part in the most important tournament in the world (December 15 to January 3).
Self-confident Pietreczko
In particular, high-flyer Pietreczko, nicknamed Pikachu, is upfront about his goals for the World Championships in London. "I'm going to the tournament to win it. That's what 90 percent of players have in mind. You'd be lying if you said I was going there to get knocked out in the third round. You always want to win," said debutant Pietreczko, who will be up against top World Championship favorite Luke Humphries from England in the third round.
World Championship semi-finalist Clemens is regarded as the most ambitious contender at Alexandra Palace from a German perspective. "The Ally Pally is a good place for him, he beat Peter Wright there and achieved great success. He will take that with him, he knows that too. Anyone expecting Clemens to reach the semi-finals is expecting too much. It would have to go very well for him to reach the semi-finals," said darts expert Elmar Paulke.
