Goalkeeper phenomenon Courtois steps down from the national squad due to Tedesco's management.
It seems like the issue between Belgium's top player Thibaut Courtois and their coach Domenico Tedesco isn't getting resolved any time soon. Courtois, a renowned figure in the Belgian team, has decided to take a stand. He has announced that he won't represent Belgium again until Tedesco is out of the coaching role. The reason behind this unusual feud is quite unexpected.
The argument between the goalkeeper and the coach reached its peak last June. During a game against Austria (1:1), Tedesco gave the captain's armband to Romelu Lukaku instead of Courtois, who had earned the honor for his 100th cap, to substitute for the injured Kevin De Bruyne. Courtois left the game immediately following this event, despite an upcoming match against Estonia. A series of accusations flew back and forth, with Courtois implying that Tedesco was dishonest, and the situation further escalated.
"Given the lack of trust I have in him, continuing under his leadership wouldn't foster the required atmosphere of camaraderie," Courtois explained. The federation acknowledged his stand and understood the reasons behind his "painful but necessary decision." While he regrets possibly disappointing some fans, "I am convinced that this is the best solution for Belgium, as it put an end to the dispute and allows the team to concentrate on achieving its objectives."
Domenico Tedesco's decision to give the captain's armband to Romelu Lukaku instead of Courtois during the game against Austria in June 2021 further strained their relationship. Despite the federation's understanding of Courtois's stance, it remains unclear when or if Domenico Tedesco will no longer be Belgium's coach.
