- Gi-hun is back in the first teaser
On December 26th, the second season of Netflix's hit "Squid Game" finally begins. The streaming service has now released the first teaser for the sequel, but it doesn't provide any content details. Fans see a lineup of players from the deadly game in the iconic green training suits from season one, with the familiar three-digit numbers on their backs. Their faces are not visible.
One number might seem familiar to fans of the series: 456. In the first season, Gi-hun, the hero and winner of the perverse competition, wore this number. In the teaser, the man with the number 456 turns around, and it is indeed Gi-hun, played by Lee Jung-jae (51).
What the Teaser Reveals About "Squid Game" Season 2
So, Gi-hun will also be participating in the next "Squid Game" season. While this was expected, it wasn't certain. In the first moving images that Netflix released in February 2024, Gi-hun was only seen in civilian clothes.
In a video presenting the new releases of the year, there was also a short clip from "Squid Game 2". In it, Gi-hun is seen on the phone at the airport. "You will regret the decision you've made," the voice from the receiver says. But player number 456 responds firmly: "I will find you, no matter what it takes." This scene directly follows the end of the first season, where Gi-hun decides not to fly to the USA and stays in Korea instead.
According to Netflix, "Squid Game" season 2 takes place three years after the events of the first season. "Gi-hun dives back into the mysterious survival game and begins another deadly game with new participants fighting for the prize of 45.6 billion won," the announcement reads.
The short clip also includes news about the already planned third season. Season three will be the final season of "Squid Game", and fans won't have to wait another three years for the final episodes, as they are set to be released in the coming year.
The "Squid Game" Success Story
In part one of the South Korean production, hundreds of heavily indebted people were invited to a series of competitions based on Korean children's games. The only winner would receive an exorbitant cash prize, while the others would face death. For Netflix, "Squid Game" was one of the most successful formats ever shown, with 142 million streaming views in the first few weeks after its 2021 release. It also marked the international breakthrough for some of its stars, with the main actor Lee Jung-jae now appearing in the "Star Wars" series "The Acolyte".
Netflix has announced that Gi-hun, played by Lee Jung-jae, will be participating in "Squid Game" season 2, as evidenced by his appearance in the teaser with his iconic number 456. In the upcoming season, Gi-hun is seen on the phone at the airport, promising to find the person who made a regrettable decision, hinting at the continuation of his story from the end of the first season.
