Gerwyn Price sensationally fails at the World Darts Championship

The World Darts Championship experiences its first big surprise after the Christmas break: Gerwyn Price fails in the third round against Brendan Dolan from Northern Ireland. The "Iceman" is still unable to build on his 2021 World Championship title.

Former world champion Gerwyn Price has surprisingly been eliminated from the World Darts Championship in London. The "Iceman", as the former rugby pro from Wales is known, lost 2:4 to Northern Ireland's Brendan Dolan in the third round this evening and will have to put a premature end to his dream of a second title after 2021.

Dolan benefited from the special set mode of the World Championship for the second time in the tournament. In his opening match against Mickey Mansell, Dolan had already won fewer legs than his opponent and still won the match. The Northern Irishman was also 13:14 behind in the leg count against Price, but won the match 4:2 after sets and sensationally reached the last 16.

For Price, the early exit is the second bitter World Championship disappointment in a row, after he was eliminated in the quarter-finals of the last World Championship with 1:5 against Gabriel Clemens. The Welshman kept pushing himself right up to the end and wanted to show his stoic opponent the limits. It only worked in places. Dolan used his second match dart on double 20 for a 4:2 coup.

The 50-year-old could face the next former world champion in the round of 16 if Gary Anderson wins against Croatian outsider Boris Krcmar on Friday evening.

The afternoon session was dominated by the English. After Stephen Bunting's clear 4:0 win over German Florian Hempel, Joe Cullen also won (4:2 against compatriot Ryan Searle). Chris Dobey and Ross Smith played a thrilling duel with high scores and close sets. Dobey won 4:2 in the end after losing two consecutive sets after leading 2:0. He will now face world champion and compatriot Michael Smith in the round of 16.
