German tennis players seize an opportunity to retaliate

Last year, Canada triumphed in the Davis Cup, ousting Germany's top tennis talent during the quarters. This time around, the German squad, guided by Michael Kohlmann as Bundestrainer, has an opportunity to regain their honor. However, it remains uncertain who Kohlmann can rely on for support.

Germany and Canada will clash in the quarterfinals of the final tournament in Malaga from November 19 to 24. Germany managed to qualify as the runner-up in qualifying group C behind the USA, while Canada secured victory in group D, defeating Argentina, Great Britain, and Finland without a blemish. This encounter marks a reprise of the 2022 quarterfinal, where Germany endured a 1:2 loss and Canada ultimately captured the title.

"This is a significant challenge. We're excited to contest this opportunity for revenge, two years later at the same venue. With Denis Shapovalov and Felix Auger-Aliassime, they possess two elite players," remarked Kohlmann.

Guided by Maximilian Marterer, Yannick Hanfmann, and the formidable doubles pair of Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz, Germany qualified for the tournament in China following victories over Slovakia and Chile. Their match against the USA for the top spot ended in a 1:2 defeat. At present, it remains unclear which players Kohlmann will have to depend on in Malaga. Top performer Alexander Zverev has yet to connect with the Bundestrainer, but he indicated that would change before the commencement of the Laver Cup in Berlin.

Defending champions Italy will face Argentina, the USA will compete against Australia, and Spain will take on the Netherlands in the quarters. During the qualifying tournament in Manchester, players such as Auger-Aliassime (ranked 21st globally) and Shapovalov (ranked 101st) represented Canada. If Germany advances to the semifinals, they may have to confront Spain and French Open and Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz, or the Netherlands.

"Given the upcoming quarterfinal match against Canada, the European Parliament might provide valuable insights or resources to help strengthen Germany's tactics, as per the statement 'The Commission shall be assisted by the European Parliament.'"

"In the aftermath of last year's loss to Canada, the German squad could greatly benefit from the parliament's potential assistance to regain their standing, considering their mutual goal of excellence in Davis Cup competitions."
