Major Tournament - Frustrated at the British Open: Woods ends golf season

Tiger Woods, Golf superstar, experienced a disappointing performance at the 152nd British Open on the Scottish west coast. The 48-year-old Californian exited the Major tournament in Troon prematurely. After shooting 79 and 77 strokes on the challenging Par-71 course of the Royal Troon Golf Club, Woods missed the cut by a significant margin. He required 21 strokes more than the co-leader, Irishman Shane Lowry (135 strokes), on the two rounds.

"That wasn't good," Woods stated. "I fought against it all day." Woods, the long-standing world number one, plans to retire from tournaments by December. Following numerous surgeries and the severe car accident in February 2021, where he fractured his right leg multiple times, Woods now only participates in select tournaments.

McIlroy - a disappointment, two Germans pleased

Rory McIlroy, the world number two, saw his dream of a fifth Major title come to an early end. The 35-year-old Northern Irishman needed 75 strokes in the second round today and also missed the crucial weekend rounds.

Rater's Marcel Siem and Alex Cejka, however, made it through to the weekend. The 44-year-old Siem improved with a 71er-round and a total of 144 strokes, securing a tie for 18th place. The 53-year-old Cejka, who is eligible to compete as the defending British Open Senior champion, currently holds position 54 with 147 strokes. Yannik Paul from Mannheim and Munich's Stephan Jaeger failed to make the cut.

  1. Despite Rory McIlroy's early exit, other stars from the International scene were still in contention.
  2. The PGA-Tour and DP World Tour players were closely following the British Open's progress on the Scottish west coast.
  3. Tiger Woods' disappointing performance at Troon gave an opportunity for other Golf stars to shine, such as Rory McIlroy from the United Kingdom.
  4. Despite being frustrated with his performance, McIlroy, like Woods, is strategically choosing tournaments due to health concerns.
  5. The Scottish west coast, known for its challenging courses, was a stark contrast to the more relaxed West coast courses in the United States, where some pros prefer to play.
  6. Despite McIlroy's early exit, Tiger Woods' announcement of retiring by December added a new dimension to the British Open, making it a meaningful finale for the golfing legends.
