Selena Gomez - From pop princess to acclaimed actress

Their reaction was rather subdued. She posted an old poster of her series, along with the comment: "We are very excited about our nominations". Shortly after that, on her Instagram account, she already started advertising her own cosmetics brand. A new kind of face powder is now available, she joyfully announced. You can hardly feel it on the skin and now she can use it "during filming, during photo shoots, basically everywhere". How nice.

You might want to know: Gomez on Instagram – it's more than the usual strategy "Celebrity seeks platform for self-promotion", but genuine love. The fabulous 426 million followers gather around the soon-to-be 32-year-old American. And keeps her fan base very close and lets them in on her concerns. For example, how she manages her diseases.

Diseases and famous lovers

Gomez has publicly spoken about body shaming and her autoimmune disease Lupus (a type of inflammatory rheumatism), for which she had to take medications that altered her body. Eventually, she had to undergo a kidney transplant. Due to her panic attacks and depression, she had to cancel a tour in 2016. Later, she admitted to having a constant anxiety and mental problems, including being diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Her romantic relationships with prominent figures – she was with The Weeknd, Nick Jonas, and Justin Bieber – added to the interest in her even more.

Gomez is the daughter of a Mexican and an Italian-American, who worked as a theater actress and became pregnant with her at 16. Her parents divorced early, and Gomez grew up in poverty with her single mother.

Her leading role as a sarcastic, free-spirited witch in the Disney series "Wizards of Waverly Place" from 2007 and her first Dance-Pop album "Kiss & Tell" from 2009 made her an idol for an entire generation. Today, there are six hits from and with her on Spotify that have more than a billion streams, including "Calm Down", "Taki Taki", and "Lose You to Love Me". In addition, she has her own cooking show under the somewhat banal German title "Selena Gomez cooks - Deliciously learning", of which there are already four seasons and a special. For this, she invites professional chefs to her home to extract kitchen secrets from them. Jamie Oliver and Gordon Ramsay have already been guests.

Pop just this side of cheesy

Large parts of the audience and casual fans have never taken the native Texan seriously. Instead, she was seen as a glittering, but superficial princess who can be funny and romantic. In television, film, and even when she presents her lightweight pop, she is just this side of cheesy.

However, Gomez can also be serious and deep, as she showed for the first time twelve years ago with a performance in the drug-infused party film "Spring Breakers". Her talent is also evident in the three seasons of the crime series "Only Murders in the Building" on Disney+. With Steve Martin and Martin Short, two older gentlemen, she plays a painter who, despite inheriting a expensive apartment in a New York building, often feels lonely and melancholic. In the second season, she even has a lesbian affair. Gomez plays this convincingly and sensitively, as a young and yet old woman who hasn't found her way yet.

For the crime series alone, she was nominated for an Emmy twice, but only in the overarching category "Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie". She went home empty-handed both times. Now, for the first time, she was nominated as "Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie" for her individual performance.

It has been the second recognition of the year for Selena Gomez. At the Film festival in Cannes, she was part of a four-woman ensemble in Jacques Audiard's Thriller-Musical "Emilia Pérez". The film is about a Mexican drug baron who transforms into a woman and wants to make amends for some of his sins. Gomez plays the blonde and unfaithful wife of the villain with so much fire and fervor that one shouldn't mess with her.

Selena Gomez has been around long enough – and ripe

The jury of the festival, presided over by Greta Gerwig, awarded the performance with an acting prize for the four-woman group, including Zoe Saldana as the lawyer.

Why does Gomez suddenly come across as artistically so good? Well, maybe she has been in the entertainment industry long enough to know and adjust her strengths. Her first job in children's television was when she was ten years old.

Her illness in her young years, her open approach to personal problems and suffering, have also emotionally matured her. It seems that she can therefore penetrate her characters more deeply and explore them more fully.

Gomez has now achieved a status where she no longer has to take into account expectations and sensitivities. Or the mockery of her new turns. She is playing freely. And fans can be sure: She will continue to surprise us. Not only with her face powder.

Selena Gomez, hailing from Texas, recently shared her excitement about her Emmy-Award nominations on her Instagram, expressing gratitude for the recognition. Her acting skills have been showcased in various projects, such as the crime series "Only Murders in the Building" and the film "Emilia Pérez" at the Cannes Film Festival, where she received an acting prize for her role.
