French Open celebrities frustrated by spectators
At the Grand Slam event in Paris, interjections are becoming a common occurrence. This year, an opponent even tossed a piece of chewing gum towards Zverev. The players are voicing their concerns, and the organizers are responding. There's a worry that it might turn into a football-like atmosphere.
Tournament director Amélie Mauresmo has announced heightened measures against troublemakers at the French Open after receiving player feedback. Speaking at a press conference, the former top-ranked player said, "We won't hesitate when it comes to respect for players and the game." She also unveiled the first sanctions.
Mauresmo instructed the officials to pay closer attention to such incidents and to swiftly eject fans for misbehavior. "Even the slightest act of disrespect will result in expulsion," Mauresmo emphasized. Additionally, alcohol consumption is no longer permitted on the bleachers.
The players voice their disapproval
No. 1-ranked Iga Świątek spoke directly to the predominantly French crowd after her second-round match against Naomi Osaka on Wednesday evening to address the issue of heckling. "It's challenging to concentrate," said the Pole during a post-match interview on the court. "When you're being heckled during a ball change or as you prepare to return a serve, it's difficult."
Belgian David Goffin, who lost to Olympic champion Alexander Zverev in the second round, shared his experience after his first-round victory against Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard. Goffin revealed that a fan had spit chewing gum at him. "It's heading more and more in the direction of football," Goffin complained. "Before long, there will be fireworks and riots in the stands. It's just ridiculous. Some people aim to create chaos rather than cheer on the players."
Other affected players
Even three-time Grand Slam winner Angelique Kerber experienced disruptions. During her first-round loss to Dutch player Arantxa Rus, the Kiel native was disturbed by a shout while serving for the set.
"This is a serious issue for us," Świątek remarked. She expressed hope that "you still like me," as some French fans pick on players they dislike and then subject them to further harassment. "But I love you, and I enjoy playing here. So let's keep it up," Świątek told the audience, who responded with mostly applause for her comments.
