German basketball world champion Franz Wagner has agreed to a multi-million dollar contract extension with his NBA club Orlando Magic. According to ESPN and The Athletic, the new contract lasts five years, and brings the 22-year-old Wagner a total of 224 million Dollars, which is equivalent to approximately 207 million Euro. The sum could even reach up to 269 million Dollars, or 249 million Euro.
According to ESPN sources, Wagner is entitled to 30 percent of the team's salary cap if he is selected for an All-NBA team. This honor is awarded annually to 15 players who are named to the First, Second and Third Team All-NBA. Wagner becomes one of the absolute top earners among all German athletes, and with one contract, he could earn more money than former NBA superstar Dirk Nowitzki, who played for the Dallas Mavericks for 21 years.
In the previous NBA season, Wagner had a significant impact on Orlando's best season since 2011/12. On average, the forward contributed 19.7 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game. Orlando ultimately lost in the first round of the playoffs to the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Franz Wagner has been playing for the Orlando Magic since 2021, and his brother Moritz is also under contract with the team.
