Formula 1 will be back on RTL from 2024
Formula 1 returns to RTL from the coming season. In a partnership with Sky, the Cologne-based broadcaster is buying the TV rights for several races of the season. Haas driver Nico Hülkenberg and Red Bull's motorsport director Helmut Marko are delighted. Soccer rights are also part of the cooperation.
Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen will soon be racing across German free-to-air TV screens again: TV broadcaster RTL is investing heavily in sports rights and, among other things, Formula 1 will once again be shown on the Cologne-based channel. In a cooperation with Sky, the English Premier League and the 2nd Bundesliga will also be shown on RTL in future.
The partnership between the TV stations is set to run for two years and will see RTL broadcast seven Formula 1 races per season live on free-to-air TV. In addition, there will be one Premier League match per week on RTL+ and three conference broadcasts of the Bundesliga 2 per season on RTL. As part of the agreement, Sky Deutschland will receive the rights to two Europa League or Europa Conference League matches per match week.
Hülkenberg is delighted with the "great news"
Not only many Formula 1 fans in Germany are likely to rejoice at this news. "Super news," Nico Hülkenberg also told ntv/RTL. "As a German F1 driver, I'm naturally delighted that the sport is once again gaining visibility among the masses in my home country. It's an important step after the sport's relevance in Germany has waned in recent years," said the Haas driver.
Helmut Marko has a similar view. "Seven races on free TV will certainly help to ensure that the boom that is shaping Formula 1 worldwide will also have a positive impact in Germany," Red Bull's motorsport director told ntv/RTL.
"As the free TV market leader in Germany, we want to offer our viewers the best content," said Stephan Schmitter, designated head of RTL Germany, in a press release. The new sports rights are intended to "perfectly complement" the existing offering of soccer, American football and motorsport (RTL already owns the TV rights for the Europa League, the Conference League and the NFL, among others) and achieve "maximum reach on free TV and in streaming". Sky CEO Barny Mills explained: "Consumer habits change over time. Our job is to anticipate these developments and offer solutions that make their lives easier. This partnership underlines that, which is why we are very excited to be working with RTL."
