Former Bayern prodigy surprises Bayer Leverkusen following league-playoff event - Borussia Dortmund
This Bundesliga weekend served up a mix of results for top teams: Bayer Leverkusen, leading 2-0, stumbled against newcomers Holstein Kiel. Borussia Dortmund, shining in the Champions League, stumbled in the league at Union Berlin. Bochum and Bremen returned home empty-handed.
VfL Bochum vs VfL Wolfsburg 1-3 (0-2)
No relief ahead of the international break for Bundesliga club VfL Bochum, who remain winless after the sixth matchday. At home, they lost to VfL Wolfsburg 1-3 (0-2). As a result, Peter Zeidler's team finds itself at the bottom of the table with just one point.
The Wolfsburg goals at the Ruhrstadion were scored by Tiago Tomas (21.), breaking his over-year scoring drought, and Jonas Wind with a brace (37./88.). Myron Boadu scored the interim equalizer for Bochum (72.). The decision came after a lengthy video review and penalty call against the hosts, which Wind initially failed to convert against goalkeeper Patrick Drewes but scored on the rebound.
Werder Bremen vs SC Freiburg 0-1 (0-0)
Thanks to Ritsu Doan, SC Freiburg matched its best start ever. The team coached by Julian Schuster emerged victorious 1-0 (0-0) away at Werder Bremen in the sixth matchday, securing its fourth win of the season. Doan scored the deciding goal for Freiburg in the 75th minute, despite the visitors not making the most of their opportunities beforehand. Bremen failed to find the net at home for the third time during the season.
Four wins from the first six matches - this feat was previously achieved by Freiburg coach legend Christian Streich in 2019/20 and 2022/23. Under Schuster, the Breisgauer are now a fixture in the top half of the table, while Werder continues its search for a home win and remains mid-table.
Bayer Leverkusen vs Holstein Kiel 2-2 (2-1)
Bayer Leverkusen suffered an unexpected setback against Bundesliga newcomers Holstein Kiel. Despite holding a 2-0 lead, the double champions had to settle for a 2-2 (2-1) draw against the spirited newcomers, missing an opportunity to improve their league record under coach Xabi Alonso.
In a one-sided affair for most of the game, Victor Boniface (4.) and Jonas Hofmann (8.) put Leverkusen in the lead early on. However, they then slowed their pace and paid the price when Max Geschwill (45+5) pulled one back for Kiel just before halftime. Fiete Arp (69., penalty) turned the game on its head and orchestrated the upset. With a victory against Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday, Bayern Munich could extend their lead over Leverkusen to five points.
1. FC Union Berlin vs Borussia Dortmund 2-1 (2-0)
Borussia Dortmund was brought back down to earth following their goal-fest against Celtic Glasgow. Four days after the impressive 7-1 victory in the Champions League, coach Nuri Sahin's team lost 1-2 (0-2) away to Union Berlin and is still waiting for its first away win in the Bundesliga.
Kevin Vogt (26., penalty) and Yorbe Vertessen (45.) scored for the unbeaten Union Berlin, while Julian Ryerson (62.), a former Union player, found the net for Dortmund, but it was not enough. For a large portion of the game, Dortmund, without Adeyemi who suffered a muscle injury in the Celtic game, appeared lacking in attack. Adeyemi had shone with his creativity and three goals in the Celtic encounter.
SC Freiburg's impressive form continues
In the wake of their impressive 1-0 victory over Werder Bremen, SC Freiburg extended their winning streak to four games in the Bundesliga.
Freiburg and Bremen's contrasting fortunes
While SC Freiburg is enjoying success at the top of the table, Werder Bremen is still searching for their first home win of the season, falling short once again after their encounter with Freiburg.
