Former Bayern Munich prospect surprises Bayer Leverkusen

This Bundesliga round offered thrilling moments for the favourites: Bayer Leverkusen extending their lead to 2-0 but then being caught off guard by newcomers Holstein Kiel. Borussia Dortmund excelled in the Champions League but fell short against Union Berlin. No victories were in sight for Bochum and Bremen.

Bochum vs Wolfsburg 1-3 (0-2)

Before the international break, Bundesliga club Bochum stayed winless after the six games. They suffered a 1-3 home loss to Wolfsburg. As a result, coach Peter Zeidler's team sits at the bottom of the table with only one point.

Wolfsburg's goals at the Ruhrstadion came from Tiago Tomas (21.), ending his over a year-long scoring drought, and Jonas Wind with a brace (37./88.). Myron Boadu netted the equalizer for Bochum at the 72nd minute. After a long video review, the visitors were awarded a penalty, which Wind initially missed, but scored on the rebound.

Bremen vs Freiburg 0-1 (0-0)

Thanks to Ritsu Doan, Freiburg matched its record start. Coach Julian Schuster's team won 1-0 at Bremen in the sixth matchday, securing its fourth win of the season. Doan scored the winner for Freiburg in the 75th minute, despite the guests not fully capitalizing on their early dominance. Bremen continues its struggle with no home goals after three home matches this season.

Achieving four wins in the first six games was also accomplished by Freiburg coach legend Christian Streich in 2019/20 and 2022/23. Now, Schuster's successor is establishing Freiburg in the upper third of the table, while Bremen remains winless at home and remains in the middle of the table.

Leverkusen vs Kiel 2-2 (2-1)

Champions League double-winner Bayer Leverkusen faltered unexpectedly against newcomers Holstein Kiel. Despite a 2-0 lead, they settled for a 2-2 (2-1) draw against the plucky Bundesliga debutant, missing out on a win in their 100th competitive game under coach Xabi Alonso.

Early on, Victor Boniface (4.) and Jonas Hofmann (8.) put Leverkusen in a commanding position. However, Leverkusen slowed down, and Max Geschwill (45.+5) capitalized on their laxness before the half. Ex-Bayern Munich player Fiete Arp (69., penalty) turned the game around, causing the shock. Bayern Munich had a chance to extend its lead over Leverkusen to five points against Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday.

Union Berlin vs Dortmund 2-1 (2-0)

Dortmund's success in the Champions League was short-lived. Four days after their spectacular 7-1 win against Celtic Glasgow, coach Nuri Sahin's team lost 1-2 at Union Berlin, extending their wait for their first away win in the Bundesliga.

Kevin Vogt (26., penalty) and Yorbe Vertessen (45.) scored for Union Berlin, who remain undefeated at home this season. For Dortmund, former Union player Julian Ryerson (62.) netted a goal, but it wasn't enough. Over an extended period, the Dortmund attack, lacking Adeyemi, failed to impress. The 22-year-old had captivated with his flair and three goals in the Celtic encounter, but suffered an injury.

In light of Bochum's struggling performance, their next challenge in the Football league could be difficult, as they face a tough opponent in the upcoming game.

Meanwhile, Holstein Kiel made headlines in the Football league, as they managed to secure a draw against Bayer Leverkusen, a notable team in the league.
