Premier League - Footballer Tom Lockyer collapsed unconscious during match - it's not the first time
It has happened again: Luton captain Tom Lockyer collapsed on the pitch during an English Premier League match. The defender suffered a head injury during the game and collapsed after around an hour. Players and spectators reacted with shock. The soccer match between AFC Bournemouth and Luton Town was abandoned.
Lockyer was treated on the pitch and was responsive again after a short time. The 29-year-old was taken off the pitch on a stretcher to loud applause from the crowd. The referee then sent both teams to the dressing rooms and did not restart the match. The Luton and Bournemouth players only returned to the pitch to applaud the fans in the stadium.
Lockyer collapsed for the second time
"We are all hoping and praying for our leader and captain Tom Lockyer, who thankfully is responsive and has been taken to hospital," Luton Town said. "We don't yet know the full extent of what has happened or what will happen next, but we thank Bournemouth and the medical staff on both sides for their immediate response, which was absolutely magnificent."
The incident brought back memories of a similar scare in the summer. Back in May, Lockyer had also collapsed during his side's promotion match against Coventry. The Luton captain then underwent heart surgery. In June, the doctors gave him the green light to return to the pitch.
"We apologize to all supporters in attendance that players from both teams were in no condition to continue the game after seeing their beloved teammate and friend taken off like that," it said, "and the staff were also unable to continue the game in such circumstances after having to deal with the situation."
