Football player George Baldock tragically passes away at the age of 31.

"Baldock's corpse was uncovered in a swimming pool at his residence in the southern Athens district of Glyfada, according to Reuters, citing police sources.

"The initial investigation is being led by the Attica Security Directorate," Greece's Ministry of Citizen Protection informed CNN Sport in a statement.

"A medical examiner was called to the scene and determined no indications of unlawful behavior. The police conducted a thorough search of the property, ruling out any forced entry.

"Furthermore, a squad from the Police's Forensic Investigations Directorate conducted an examination of the premises to rule out any criminal activities," the statement continued.

Athens football club Panathinaikos, who signed Baldock earlier this year on a three-year contract, issued a tribute to the player, expressing in a statement, "We're stunned, we're upset by the loss of our George. The Panathinaikos family mourns his sudden demise."

"We stand with the family and loved ones of George Baldock."

Baldock represented Greece 12 times throughout his career. In a statement on Facebook, the Greek national team declared the defender's death "with deep sympathy and anguish."

It added, "No words can express the human agony caused by the news of this untimely loss of one of our own. The situation calls for silence. Condolences to his family. Condolences from his second family. Goodbye..."

Baldock commenced his career at MK Dons and subsequently played for Oxford United and Northampton Town, among other clubs, prior to shining for Sheffield United in the Premier League.

"Sheffield United Football Club is shocked and deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former player, George Baldock," the club said in a statement.

"The defender departed the club this summer following seven years at Bramall Lane and was exceptionally popular with supporters, staff, and teammates who donned the red and white jersey alongside him."

"The heartfelt condolences of everyone associated with Sheffield United are extended to George’s family and friends."

George Baldock's love for football was evident throughout his career, as he played for several clubs, including Sheffield United in the Premier League. Later, he signed a three-year contract with Athens football club Panathinaikos.

Despite his success in various sports competitions, football remained his passion.
