Münster can't be stopped: the Prussians clinch back-to-back promotions, this time up to the 2nd Bundesliga. It's been 33 years since the club was last in this league. On the final day, Preußen held no doubts about their victory.
Preußen Münster makes a triumphant return to the 2nd Bundesliga after 33 years with a decisive march from the Regionalliga. The founding member of the Bundesliga sealed promotion on the final day of the third division with a 2-0 (2-0) win over SpVgg Unterhaching, ending the season in second place behind champions SSV Ulm with 67 points. Runners-up SSV Jahn Regensburg (63) will face relegation in a battle against the 16th-placed team in the 2nd Bundesliga, following a 0:1 (0:1) loss to 1. FC Saarbrücken.
Goals from Sebastian Mrowca (4th minute) and captain Marc Lorenz (17th minute) settled the match in a packed Preußenstadion, with approximately 13,000 spectators. Preußen goalkeeper Max Schulze-Niehues even saved a penalty from Unterhaching's Patrick Hobsch in his last game.
The last time Münster competed in the 2nd division was in the 1990/91 season. The team was one of the original members of the then two-tier Bundesliga 2 in 1974, and played there for a total of nine seasons. Preußen only played in the top-tier Bundesliga in the first season in 1963/64.
