Five extravagant cars showcasing Chinese engineering, boasting impressive specs, sleek gullwing doors, and powerful engines.
The blazing speed of high-performance sports cars, sleek convertibles, or gigantic electric vehicles: China's automotive industry is breaking records and setting fresh trends with astonishing new automobiles.
The Chinese automotive sector made its presence known at Auto China 2024 in Beijing in late April. Apart from the vast number of electric cars displayed, these manufacturers from the Middle Kingdom mesmerized attendees with unconventional models.
Aion Hyper SSR
The eye-catching Aion Hyper SSR, a brand new electric sports car, emerged from the GAC family. This striking gullwing measures just under 4.5 meters and is currently available in China in two different versions: a mid-engine rear-wheel drive entry-level model and an all-wheel drive quad-motor Ultimate edition.
Chinese media reports the Ultimate model, with its system output of 913 kW/1225 hp and 12,000 newton meters of torque, can catapult from 0 to 100 km/h in an astonishing 1.9 seconds. GAC unites a 75-kWh battery with a 900-volt architecture. The promising range of more than 500 kilometers is achieved with this arrangement.
Hyper SSR highlights include a carbon body, variable aerodynamics system, digital cockpit, and self-driving features. GAC has priced the Hyper SSR around 166,000 euros.
Hongqi EH7 Convertible
Premium brand Hongqi, part of the FAW Group, is presently aiming for a German launch and is focusing on an electric strategy. The Hongqi EH7 displayed at Beijing comes in both sedan and convertible variations with an electric powertrain. This 4.9-meter, two-door, 2+2-seater convertible boasts an electric soft top that completely retracts into a hidden box between the rear seat bench and the trunk.
The EH7's cabin offers a digital instrument cluster with two 13.5-inch touchscreens that extend from the driver's door to the front passenger door. Physical buttons have been predominantly eliminated from the interior décor. The EH7 was showcased with a 455 kW/619 hp powertrain that accelerates the vehicle to 100 km/h in less than four seconds.
The EH7 is powered by batteries from CATL. The vehicle promises a range of 600 kilometers with an exchangeable battery and an impressive 800 kilometers in the version equipped with a fixed, long-distance battery.
GAC Trumpchi Empow R
The GAC Trumpchi Empow R is a convertible based on the Empow saloon released in 2021. Initially offered with a combustion engine, the sporty car is now presented in Beijing as a two-door convertible. This petrol-powered two-litre turbocharged engine, offered with an 8-speed automatic gearbox, produces 195 kW/265 hp. The sprint from 0-100 km/h is approximated at six seconds, with a top speed of 230 km/h.
Despite turning into a convertible, the passenger compartment has been reduced in size, allowing the sleek fabric roof to be safely stowed away in a roof box between the cargo area and the rear bench seat. The interior boasts modern connectivity technologies, driver face recognition, and a professional-grade Yamaha sound system.
Exeed E08
The 5.2-meter Exeed E08 concept car from the Chery brand is no less breathtaking. This vehicle's monolithic design emphasizes a colossal front end dominating the exterior with a vast, single-piece frontal surface, which can be internally illuminated to mimic an ostentatious radiator grille.
This MPV forgoes B-pillars and includes four sliding doors, creating an entrance pillar-less and expansive to the interior. The spacious inner compartment features three rows of seats. The cargo compartment is also multifunctional, transforming into a lounge area with a sofa designed for picnics while being shielded from the elements.
Dongfeng Concept Pick-up Truck
The pick-up truck concocted by Dongfeng is a striking showpiece, even as a concept car. Its incredible dimensions are comparable to the Tesla Cybertruck. The massive truck's exterior showcases no sharp corners or angles. Dongfeng, however, ensures this leisure vehicle is not short on power, sporting an electric drive emitting more than 1300 hp.
