First wait, then win: Zverev's plan in Turin
For Alexander Zverev, it's all about waiting today. Waiting to see whether his last group match at the ATP Finals in Turin against Andrei Rublev, who has already been eliminated, has any significance at all.
Because only if Daniil Medvedev from Russia, who has already qualified for the semi-finals, wins against Wimbledon winner Carlos Alcaraz from Spain beforehand will Zverev still have a chance of reaching the semi-finals in the evening match.
"I'm in an unfavorable situation now. You never want that, you always want to have everything in your own hands," said Zverev. But because he lost to his long-term rival Medvedev in two sets after his opening win against Alcaraz, he is reliant on Medvedev's support.
Zverev has not yet given up hope. "Daniil is playing very well, he has a very good chance of winning against Carlos," said Zverev. "But I also have to be focused and ready to beat Andrei myself." He has lost all three of his matches against the Russian so far this year.
If Medvedev manages to defeat Alcaraz in their ATP Finals match, Zverev will need to win against Rublev to advance to the semi-finals in tennis. Regardless of the outcome against Rublev, Zverev has expressed his confidence in Medvedev's ability to win, as he has yet to defeat the Russian in any of their three meetings this year.
