Drivers, both male and female, should carefully consider where they fuel up. At motorways, prices at the pump can sometimes be relatively expensive. The ADAC recommends: taking detours.

According to an ADAC survey, motorists often pay more at motorway service stations compared to their counterparts just beyond the respective exits. The traffic club found an average price difference of 39 cents for Super E10 petrol and 38 cents for diesel when comparing motorway service stations with those located near the exits. In the top 40 pairs of service stations surveyed along major motorways, the ADAC found price differences of 54 cents for petrol and 50 cents for diesel. These differences were lower than they were a year ago, when the highest difference reached 70 cents for petrol and 36 cents for diesel.

The phenomenon of motorway service stations charging disproportionately high fuel prices has been an issue for some time, according to Stefan Gerwens, head of the traffic department at the ADAC. "From the ADAC's perspective, such high markups are not justifiable." Gerwens advises drivers to get off the motorway. A short detour usually pays off, the traffic club stated.

ADAC offers another tip

Prices have recently risen again after a prolonged decline. It is worth noting that this coincided with the start of the summer travel season in some federal states. However, it is likely a coincidence that both petrol and diesel prices have risen, as diesel is much more frequently demanded by commercial customers than the petrol typically used by private motorists.

Additionally, the ADAC recommends filling up in the evening. In most cases, both fuels are cheaper then. And for those traveling abroad, the ADAC suggests checking fuel prices at the destination, as EU Commission data shows. Fuels are generally much cheaper, especially in the east and southeast of Germany.
