Fiete Arp's debut leads Holstein to first-round record
Fiete Arp moves from HSV to FC Bayern in 2019. He never arrives and moves to Holstein Kiel in 2021. He celebrates a very special premiere there at the end of 2023. The Storks leap to the top of the Bundesliga 2 with a record number of points.
Holstein Kiel are dreaming of a promotion fairytale and their first Bundesliga season over the Christmas period. Former Bayern striker Fiete Arp scored twice to lead his team to a 3-0 (3-0) win over Hannover 96, their fifth victory in a row. It was Arp's first brace of his professional career.
With 35 points from 17 games, Kiel took the lead in the 2nd division table, at least for one night, and would even be champions in the fall if FC St. Pauli (32, but with the better goal difference) do not win against promoted SV Wehen Wiesbaden on Sunday. Holstein are four points ahead of third-placed Hamburger SV, who have already played this weekend. "That's a nice snapshot that makes us happy," said managing director Uwe Stöver at the break. "We're a bit surprised ourselves, but we're happy to take it."
Hannover fans protest diligently
Kiel have never reached 35 points at the end of the first half of the Bundesliga 2. They collected 33 points in the 2017/2018 season and 32 three seasons later, narrowly missing out on promotion in both years. No club from Schleswig-Holstein has ever reached the top flight of German soccer.
Kiel particularly impressed on this December evening with their brutal efficiency. After a lengthy discussion about a supposed penalty, which was not a penalty after all, Timo Becker (26) and Arp (27) scored within 60 seconds to make it 2-0. The third goal was set up by Becker for Arp (45), who had to be substituted shortly afterwards with an adductor injury. There were also celebrations before kick-off as the club announced the contract extensions of Lewis Holtby and Timon Weiner.
96 had started quite well but were almost hopelessly behind at half-time. The many fans among the 13,902 spectators concentrated on protesting against Martin Kind and the DFL investor deal. Max Christiansen, who only came on as a second-half substitute, was then shown a yellow-red card (67').
