Summer games in Germany? - Federal Cabinet intends declaration for Olympic bid

The German government is making a serious move for a new German Olympic bid just before the Summer Games in Paris. The Federal Cabinet is expected to make an intent declaration on Wednesday, according to government sources. The goal is reportedly a bid for the Summer Games in 2040. Previously, there had been controversial discussions about a German bid for 2036, exactly 100 years after the Nazi Games in Berlin.

The coalition government has already allocated 2.2 million Euros in the federal budget for 2025 for the possible process of a German application for the Olympic and Paralympic Games. The German Olympic Sports Federation (DOSB) had already passed a basic resolution for another bid in December.

DOSB Chief: Concrete plans next year

On December 7, the DOSB will take further steps at its members' assembly in Saarbrucken. "We will certainly declare in the first half of 2025 who is bidding, what we are doing, and how we are proceeding," DOSB President Thomas Weikert said in the ZDF "Sportstudio".

The goal of the umbrella organization was previously a candidacy for the Summer Games in 2036 or 2040. Berlin, Hamburg, Leipzig, Munich, and the Rhine-Ruhr region have all expressed their interest in a bid with intent declarations. However, previous Olympic campaigns in Germany in Munich and Hamburg failed due to public resistance and votes.

After the Paris Games, which open on a Friday, Los Angeles is the next Summer host in 2028. Brisbane, Australia, has been awarded the Summer Games for 2032.

The Federal Cabinet, in alignment with the German government, is planning to declare its intention for a German bid for the Summer Games in 2040, as reported by government sources. This decision comes in light of the upcoming Summer Games in Paris. The German Olympic Sports Federation (DOSB) had previously passed a resolution for another bid in December and aims to present concrete plans by next year. The DOSB President, Thomas Weikert, mentioned in a ZDF "Sportstudio" discussion that they will declare their bid, plan of action, and progress in the first half of 2025. Several cities in Germany, including Berlin, Hamburg, Leipzig, Munich, and the Rhine-Ruhr region, have expressed interest in hosting the Summer Games, although past Olympic campaigns in Germany faced public resistance and failed to materialize. The next Summer Games after Paris are scheduled for 2028 in Los Angeles, followed by Brisbane, Australia, in 2032.
