- FC Cologne and their coach Timo Schultz will no longer work together in the 2. Liga. The Rhineland club officially announced the news. Schultz's contract, which he signed at the beginning of the year, will end on June 30, 2024, and so will his co-trainers André Pawlak and Kevin McKenna.
Away from the Bundesliga after a season - FC Köln separates from Schultz - successor unclear.
"We spent a significant amount of time in the last week to plan the second half of the season with Timo and make every effort to escape relegation. Ultimately, we all agreed that it's time for a new beginning in the coaching team with fresh ideas," said FC's business manager, Christian Keller.
Schultz, who also coached at FC Basel and FC St. Pauli, could not save the Koln team from relegation in their second half of the season. In 18 games under his leadership, the club earned only three wins and remained in the relegation zone. "Given that we didn't achieve our primary goal - class maintenance - I think it's fair and reasonable for someone new to take over," said Schultz.
The successor has yet to be named, and faces a tough situation. Cologne is likely to lose some of their top players. Defensive specialist Jeff Chabot has already joined VfB Stuttgart, and due to a FIFA ban, the team can only anticipate players from their own youth system and loan players returning next season.
At the moment, there's no clarity on the replacement for Schultz. The new coach will have a challenging second league season to manage.
