FC Bayern signs Bundestrainer and World Champion-maker
Gordon Herbert wins EM-Bronze with German basketball team and then sensationally the WM-Title. After the Olympic tournament, he seeks a new challenge. His new job is now set: The Canadian wechesels to FC Bayern Munich.
Gordon Herbert, the German basketball team's World Champion coach, will take over the trainer position at FC Bayern Munchen's basketball team starting next season. The German champion announced that the 65-year-old has signed a two-year contract until 2026. The news comes just before Bayern's basketball team's debut at the Paris Summer Games on Saturday (13 hours/ARD, Eurosport and in ntv.de-Liveticker) against Japan.
Herbert stated about his new job: "I am very honored to become the coach of a club like Bayern Munchen, one of the biggest and best-organized sports brands in the world." This is a special moment, "for which I will make sacrifices." The Canadian emphasized that currently "100-percent" his focus is on the Nationalteam.
The Bavarian double champion will also consider the Olympic mission and therefore waives "any further communication regarding the new season," it was stated. Bayern-President Herbert Hainer described Herbert as "the solution we were looking for."
Four Bayern stars are with Herbert in Paris
The Basketball Bundesliga (BBL) is also accommodating the appointment: Normally, national trainers must take a three-month break before they can take over a BBL team. The league announced on Wednesday that this rule "does not apply" and that the clubs had agreed to this in a digital meeting. The regulation will now be reconsidered. Herbert can therefore start directly.
Herbert's predecessor Pablo Laso surprisingly requested a contract termination at Bayern in June and left the club. Therefore, FCBB-Commercial Director Marko Pešić stated that it was a challenge to find a trainer who could handle the planned signings: "It was obvious that it could only be Gordie, if there was a possibility, because he already knows part of the players and the league."
In the coming season, there will be four players under contract in Munich who are currently with the German basketball team in Paris: Niels Giffey, Andreas Obst, Oscar da Silva, and Nick Weiler-Babb. The German basketball team (DBB) is aiming for a third medal in three years in Paris after the WM triumph in the previous year and the third place at the European Championship 2022.
The upcoming transfer news in the world of basketball is buzzing, as it's been announced that Gordon Herbert, the recent World Champion coach of the German basketball team, will be joining Munich Bayern Basketball next season. This move has sparked Interest in basketball rumors and transfers across Europe.
With his new role at FC Bayern Munich, Herbert will be tasked with leading the basketball team in their upcoming challenges, including the Paris Summer Games, where four of their players are currently representing the German national team and aiming for another medal.
