FC Bayern confronts potential issues with rumored Tuchel shift.
FC Bayern is making attempts to revamp their squad, but the absence of a new coach has made it challenging to make decisive moves. The latest developments concerning Thomas Tuchel are causing trouble for the club. This isn't the first time it's happened either.
The recent turn of events in FC Bayern's ongoing search for a new coach has hit the headlines, much to the dismay of sporting director Max Eberl. Normally, Eberl highlighted on Sunday, "We discuss things privately. We reach an agreement or we don't - and then we go our separate ways." The continuous talk about the happenings in the club isn't making things any rosier for him.
However, is this justified at FC Bayern? Another leak has appeared at the record-holders, revealing the internal deliberations from the supervisory board meeting. Sports directors Max Eberl and Christoph Freund have been battling to retain the services of Thomas Tuchel. But the future remains far from certain for the 50-year-old coach, despite claims to the contrary by the boardroom and speculations from Uli Hoeneß. The resulting consequences have been hotly debated ever since.
Either way, Bayern's position is precarious. The continued employment of Tuchel, despite his contract expiring in the summer, will have wide-reaching repercussions. For instance: How much power will Tuchel hold if he stays?
With the dismissal of top candidates such as Xabi Alonso, Julian Nagelsmann, Ralf Rangnick, and most recently, Oliver Glasner, Munich is under intense pressure to find a coach. And Tuchel is aware of this. He could dictate terms in this tense situation. Former demands for a "holding six" may resurface. It's also unclear how Tuchel would handle players with whom he's had difficulties in the past, for example, Leon Goretzka, Joshua Kimmich, Matthijs de Ligt, Alphonso Davies, and Dayot Upamecano.
Is Tuchel seriously considering his options?
The uncertainty surrounding the need for a new coach is making the planned changes difficult for Eberl and Freund. Nevertheless, they are pressing forward with their squad planning in the background. "We have ideas and thoughts," Eberl affirmed. Furthermore, only two players, Bouna Sarr and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, have their contracts expiring. "Kicker" reports that five to seven new players are about to join the team. This is only feasible if one or two other stars leave early.
But would Tuchel stay despite being a temporary solution that may be replaced next year? The "Süddeutsche" insists that Tuchel is "seriously mulling it over." However, offering him a long-term contract with multiple years seems to be "apparently not feasible" in the supervisory board. Tuchel's current contract ends in 2025.
But does he want to be a stopgap that's terminated next year? So many questions remain unanswered. For now, Tuchel is set to play his farewell game against TSG Hoffenheim on Saturday (3.30 pm/Sky and in the live ticker at ntv.de). And then what happens? The public is likely to learn about Bayern's plans very soon. Much to the dissatisfaction of Max Eberl.
