Winter chaos in Munich - FC Bayern against Union Berlin canceled
The Bundesliga match between FC Bayern Munich and Union Berlin scheduled for this Saturday at 3:30 pm has been canceled due to heavy snowfall in the Bavarian capital. This was first announced by Munich's public transport company on their website.
Soccer Bundesliga match canceled. The onset of winter in the south of Bavaria has led to the cancellation of the match between Bayern Munich and Union Berlin. "Football match in Fröttmaning canceled today. Dear passengers, the soccer match between FC Bayern Munich and Union Berlin in Fröttmaning today at 3:30 p.m. has been canceled," Munich's public transport company announced on its website this morning. A little later, the DFL also made a statement. It announced that the owner of the Allianz Arena had "closed the stadium for today's match due to persistent heavy snowfall". The rescheduling of the match will be announced shortly.
Webcam footage from the Munich stadium this morning showed efforts to at least clear the pitch of snow. But by 10 a.m., large areas of the 8,000 m2 pitch were still covered in snow. The access roads to the slightly elevated arena were also buried under the snow. Employees were trying to make paths towards the stadium gates.
Heavy snowfall had already caused chaos in the south of Bavaria during the night. Train services to and from Munich Central Station are currently suspended. "Onset of winter: rail traffic in southern Germany currently severely disrupted. Munich Central Station currently not accessible," is currently stated on the Deutsche Bahn website: "We assume that the [...] restrictions will last throughout 02.12.2023. We recommend postponing travel to and from Munich."
Air traffic in Munich also suspended
Buses, streetcars and suburban trains are currently not running in the Bavarian capital. "Bus, streetcar and S-Bahn services have unfortunately been suspended for today for safety reasons due to the weather conditions," Munich's public transport company announced early on Saturday. Although the U6 line, which is essential for transporting fans to the stadium, was running in the morning in the direction of the city center, it was interrupted in the north.
Air traffic at Munich Airport was also suspended in the morning due to the snowfall. It is expected to resume by 12 noon. The winter road clearance service is working to ensure that operations can be resumed safely, a spokesperson said.
The cancellation in Munich is already the third match in the Bundesliga to be canceled due to weather conditions since the beginning of February 2020. In February 2021, the match between Arminia Bielefeld and Werder Bremen had to be canceled due to a massive onset of winter.
A year earlier, in early February 2020, storm "Sabine" caused the match between Borussia Mönchengladbach and 1. FC Köln to be canceled. The Rhineland derby was rescheduled for March 11, 2020. Even before the lockdown, it was played as a ghost match due to its geographical proximity to the German coronavirus "epicenter" of Heinsberg.
