Failure of HSV to secure promotion with final match
Hamburg SV is doomed to play in the 2nd Bundesliga next season after suffering a defeat at SC Paderborn. With this loss, the Red Shirts can no longer reach the relegation spots. In contrast, 1. FC Magdeburg is still shaking in fear of relegation.
Hamburger SV has thrown away its chance to ascend back to the Bundesliga, as they will now be playing in the second tier. After their 0:1 (0:1) loss against SC Paderborn, the squad led by coach Steffen Baumgart cannot reach the bottom slots - this news means that HSV is facing its seventh term in the lower division, with an uncertain future ahead.
Koen Kostons scored the opening goal in the 7th minute, taking advantage of a cross. This outcome also means that Fortuna Düsseldorf has a guaranteed place in the relegation play-offs. The Rhinelanders are four points away from FC St. Pauli and five points behind leaders Holstein Kiel, who can clinch promotion on matchday 33.
On the other hand, 1. FC Magdeburg had a chance to ensure early relegation with a goalless draw against SpVgg Greuther Fürth but missed it. This leaves them at risk of sliding further down the table if the remaining games don't go in their favor.
It appeared that HSV underperformed in Paderborn and was caught off guard by the host team's strength and determination. Kostons capitalized on SC Paderborn's initial opportunity, leaving goalkeeper Matheo Raab no chance.
Kostons (13) and Raphael Obermair (16) could have increased the scoreline to 2-0, but HSV completely lost its groove throughout the game. The most opportunity came from Jean-Luc Dompe in the 36th minute. Ransford Königsdörffer (69) had the best chance but was unable to control the ball in the penalty area.
