F1 racer Magnussen expresses frustration over perceived unjust penalties

During the Italian Grand Prix, Formula 1 driver Magnussen from the Haas team intentionally triggered a collision, resulting in a penalty handed down by the stewards. This penalty, consisting of a 10-second time penalty and two points added to his record, brought Magnussen's total to 12 points. With 12 points as the maximum allowed, he might miss the upcoming Baku race, suspected of preferential treatment.

Points for drivers are monitored over the past year, and a ban follows after accumulating 12 points. While Haas may contest the verdict, failure to overturn it would mean Magnussen's absence from the Baku Grand Prix on September 15.

Speaking to Sky, an agitated Magnussen questioned the penalties, saying, "We were just racing, I can't fathom why they're doling out penalties like this." Having interacted with the stewards numerous times, he remains baffled by the rulebook's complexity. It appears that rules are being applied without a clear, consistent standard if actions like these are being penalized.

In the absence of Magnussen, the Haas team may substitute him with 19-year-old Oliver Bearman. An established figure in Formula 2, Bearman serves as Haas's reserve driver, preparing for a full-time role with the team in the upcoming season. In March, Bearman made his Formula 1 debut, standing in for an ill Carlos Sainz at Ferrari and earning points.

The Haas F1 team is facing the possibility of competing without Magnussen in the Baku race due to the accumulated points from the penalties. If the penalties are not overturned, Oliver Bearman, the team's reserve driver and an established figure in Formula 2, might replace Magnussen in the upcoming race.
